Bound by the Masks
A concept art for animation inspired by the story of Phi Ta Khon festival, blended with the fantasy of a magical forest.
Bound by the Masks is a Thai fantasy adventure concept art project for animation, following Thanwa, a boy who feels overlooked by his family. During the Phi Ta Khon festival, his younger sister is pulled into a hidden spirit world. With no way back, he must journey through a forest of spirits, magical creatures, and unseen dangers to bring her home.
Design Process
This project is also inspired by personal experience, as I come from the northeastern region of Thailand, where the vibrant spirit of local festivals has always been familiar to me. I wanted to reflect that sense of color, energy, and cultural richness in the visual design.
The environments were developed by blending real Thai locations with inspiration from the Himaphan forest, creating a contrast between the lively festival and the mysterious spirit world. The designs of the magical creatures are also inspired by Himaphan beings, which connect to the folklore behind the festival itself.
